Too much Disney saccharine in your collection? Try this ...

There are no brightly coloured scenes - ice is mostly white. The nearest visual parallel in a Disney film I can remember is Mulan. None of the characters are cuddly or beautiful, not even the people, except maybe the baby, who isn't really a character. It's not eye-candy.

The dialogue is not full of one liners or movie references like Shrek or MI. If you need this to get you through a DVD, you'll be disappointed.What this movie gives you are some deep and disturbing characters and their relationships. Diego kills the baby's mother at the start. Man, possibly the same tribe as the baby, killed Manfred's family. Diego is an outcast from his pack and needs the baby and possibly a mammoth carcass to buy his way back in. Diego can't kill Manfred on his own, Manfred needs Diego to track. Sid is a total social failure who is too repulsive to eat and provides a pair of hands to change nappies. Dark enough? Yet all the above will go right over your kids heads, as none of it is graphic. It comes out in the dialogue.

Don't compare this with MI or Shrek. A better comparison for content/theme might be with "James and the Giant Peach". I feel my kids get more out of this than typical animated blockbusters, as it is a little deeper, and (slightly) less fantastic.

4* because the visuals are sometimes too subtle to keep the kids' attention. It needs a little more of Scrat the squirrel to lighten it up.
